salento
Italy… In southern Italy lies Apulia. At the tip of Apulia lies Salento. At the tip of Salento, Gagliano del Capo… This is where 700,000 Heures will first start the clock. Between
the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Where the curtain will rise on our adventure. Imagine…
Our first destination… Your first residence! We will welcome you without any attempts to hide our excitement… Come quickly! We’re waiting for you…
What is it that gives Italian palaces their unmistakeable charm? Such a unique atmosphere... an indescribable quality that circulates, transporting us to another time… Here, frescos and mosaics set the scene for stories like no other… For 700,000 heures, our host Francesco has agreed to reveal a few more secrets sure to astonish you!
A village square …
Some palm trees, colorful façades, a beckoning bench or two… the scene has been set. Children play ball, a few men play cards on a café patio, market stalls brim with sun-kissed tomatoes and figs, shopping bags get filled to the tune of laughter and song… Church bells strike the hour.
The first swim! Imagined many dozens of times, it will long remain a treasured memory …The only question is how many hours you can resist once you’ve arrived before pulling on your swimsuit and diving into the turquoise water!
Today, we discover the treasures of Salento! Galatina, Gallipoli, Sant’Andrea, Otranto,… 700,000 Heures has prepared our roadmap… A surprise awaits you in the courtyard... This will truly be a grand adventure!!!! Map in hand and a picnic basket in the boot, it’s time to set off and explore Apulia’s most picturesque villages …
Spongamo… A labyrinth of alleyways to wander through on foot or by bike… Countless plots of three-hundred-year-old olive trees hemmed in by dry stone walls... Such a tranquil atmosphere! Rosa, our chef, is collecting herbs and flowers for lunch! Today, our meal will be cooked before our eyes, served next to a clump of blackberry bushes… Over there, in the shade, an open trunk displays a collection of plaids for naptime... Leaves rustle in the wind...
Salento is one of the oldest wine producing regions in the world. It is truly spectacular to explore the vines during the harvest… Primitivo, negroamaro, malvasia nera, bombino bianco, Verdecca… so many delightful unknown varieties to discover! In a cool cellar, surrounded by barrels and kegs, the tasting begins …
This morning, the water is calm and clear, the sky a brilliant blue…Giuseppe awaits us at the port with his traditional fishing boat… Today will be warm and lovely out on the open sea! Perfect solitude, rocked by the purring of the engine, the horizon our only limit… Take a dip in the turquoise sea, swim into a freshwater cave, savor freshly caught sea urchins… Wash them down with a glass of white wine... Go ahead, lay back for an afternoon nap.
Italy rhymes with Gastronomy! For us, with Rosa and Giuseppina at the stove, the vocabulary of Italian cuisine seems comprised only with words that end with "a"… Such as cucina della mamma... or with "o", such as a sugo di pomodoro whose smell is reminiscent of the terroir and its traditions.
Before we leave, let’s take a nighttime walk through the streets of Lecce… In late summer, the temperature starts to cool down… Silence, echoing footsteps... and the façades of the houses in twilight, each more beautiful than the last... The bittersweetness of leaving slowly subsides and is replaced by gratitude…
